I was inspired during a backpacking trip where my friends and I had to set up camp at night. I wanted to design a lightweight lantern that would be convenient to grab when I needed it. Refrakt is a water bottle that doubles as a lantern so you always have light with you while also saving space in your pack. I experimented with different bottle and cap shapes. I eventually landed on a design that blends typical form language of a lantern with the ergonomics and proportions of a water bottle.
Once I felt confident in the design based on my renders I began designing the electronics that would create the light. This included designing a charging circuit for a rechargeable lipo battery, and a USB-C port. I then began redesigning the CAD model to house all of the electronics and be optimized for 3D printing. I then assembled the first functioning prototype.
